The provision of quality healthcare today requires providers to have access to as much information about the person being treated as can be collected, integrated and readily accessed. Currently, the vast majority of providers do not have access to all the information that exists about individual patients since it is collected, isolated and stored in multiple ways/places by each provider or facility. To make full-use of the meaning of each piece of information, that information must be presented in a way that provides the ability to obtain that meaning.

Meaningful Use is a Government program to encourage providers and hospitals to implement electronic health records (EHR) as a significant tool for improving the quality of care provided. Incentive payments can be earned by meeting established criteria. The goal is to “promote the use of electronic health records to improve health in the United States”.
